Who We Are What We Do Why We Do It Mission Ghana 2007 Mission Ghana 2008 Mission Ghana 2009 Can I Go? How Can I Help? How Did This Get Started? Other Water Projects Calendar FAQ Contact |
water4Ghana has made two trips to Ghana in two years. I would like to boast of our great successes so you would give us much praise and jump to support our work. But, I will not boast. I will however give to God the glory for the work He has allowed us to accomplish on our two trips. The first trip in November of 2007was quite a learning experience. Although we were able to successfully install and get running one system, we ran out of time to adequately train and leave behind people fully able to maintain and keep the system in operation. Although the system is fairly easy to use, to one unfamiliar with an off/on button, even that simple control can be overwhelming. Secondly, we learned to check and recheck all of our equipment before we leave. One of our systems had a minor flaw which prevented our doing a second installation. Which given the fact we did not have time to do adequate training on one system on one, leaving two systems behind without trained users would have been twice the mistake. On our second trip in November of 2008, we learned to be flexible. We were well prepared for the mission. All our supplies, our system, tools, and plans were in order. Trouble is, nothing it seemed, went according to plan. We had planned to fly from Accra, the Capitol, in the South, to Tamale, in the North, but due to the death of a Government official, all airline seating had been chartered by the government. We had to make alternate plans. But God provided. After an extra day of unplanned travel, we arrived at out destination at Nalerigu which is in Northwestern Ghana, home of the Mampruli tribe, to whom we have become known as the "water people." As I said, nothing went according to plan, but more than we had planned was accomplished. We were able to install a two tank system which will serve about 4000 people. It has a sixteen person operation team, four of whom will be replaced each year by four new persons, and this will be an ongoing process. The four new people will be trained by the twelve remaining each year. The system we had install in 2007 was moved to a village well which was contaminated with Typhoid Fever. This installation required installation also of a gasoline pump to raise the water to the purification tank. After installation of the systems, we returned on each of four days to work with those who would be operating the systems and we also have members of the local WATSAT (Water and Sanitation Board) involved who are learning the operation and maintenance of the systems also. For more on the WATSAT follow this link...... Again, we hope to return this year. Each trip only opens up more doors of opportunity as more needs are revealed. One of the local Water officials has called me to ask how many systems we can bring this year so he will know how many wells to drill. Even when new wells are drilled they quickly become polluted, or are already polluted due to poor natural sanitation, or parasite infections such as Guinea Worm. Their desire is to put a purifier on each well as it is drilled. TALK ABOUT MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? But then I recently received and email from a missionary in Benin asking if we could bring 75 and install them. I never envisioned the need until I felt led to take one water purifier to Ghana. It has become a "God Sized" task and Dr. Henry Blackaby, in his "Experiencing God" series tells us that we will KNOW that God has invited us to join Him in His work if He gives us a task we cannot do, that only He can do, that we have to trust in Him to get it done, because it's "GOD SIZED." I hope that many of you looking at this site will choose to join me in this GOD SIZED mission. |
